Reddit Handle Scout
Enter a username β see whether it is available, or who already has it
How Does the Reddit Handle Scout Work?
The checker queries Reddit's public API in real time. A 404 response confirms the username is unclaimed and ready to register. A 200 response means someone already owns it β and we'll show you their public account stats so you know how active they are.
Any Reddit username (3β20 chars, letters/numbers/underscores/hyphens)
Available (green badge + register link) or Taken (karma, age, cake day, suspended status)
Anyone claiming a new Reddit identity, brand accounts, or verifying a handle before promoting it
If available, register immediately at reddit.com/register β handles are first-come, first-served
2-Step Username Check
Enter the Username
Type the handle you want β just the name, without the 'u/' prefix. The tool validates the format (3β20 chars, no spaces or special characters) before checking.
See Live Results
The tool pings Reddit's API and returns the result in seconds. Green badge means it's yours to take. Red badge means it's registered β along with that account's karma and age.
Register or Try a Variation
If available, click the Reddit registration link and lock it in immediately. If taken, use the suggested variations (underscore, hyphen, or keyword addition) to find an alternative.
How to check Reddit username availability
Paste the handle into the checker above. It queries Reddit's public user data and reports one of two outcomes: the handle resolves to an existing account, in which case you see that account's karma split, age, and cake day β or nothing resolves, which means no public account is currently using it.
One caveat worth knowing before you plan around a name: Reddit has no handle-reservation API, so availability can only be confirmed at the moment you register. A name that reads as free today can be taken by someone else an hour later. If a specific handle matters to you, check it immediately before signing up rather than days in advance.
Reddit username rules
Most failed signups are a rule violation rather than a collision. The constraints Reddit enforces:
- 3β20 charactersShorter or longer handles are rejected at signup.
- Letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens onlyNo spaces, no periods, no other punctuation.
- Not case-sensitive for identityReddit preserves the capitalisation you choose, but you cannot register a handle that differs from an existing one only by case.
- Permanent once createdReddit does not let you rename an account. Changing your handle means registering a new account and rebuilding its karma from zero.
The last one is the constraint people regret most. Because a handle is permanent and karma is not transferable, picking a name you will still want in two years matters more on Reddit than on platforms that allow renaming.
Why a username shows as taken when the account looks empty
A handle can resolve to an account with no visible posts, no karma, and no activity. That still counts as taken. Reddit has two decades of registrations behind it, and abandoned accounts are never recycled β the handle stays claimed indefinitely.
Suspended accounts work the same way. If the checker reports a suspension, the handle is still unavailable: suspension removes the account's ability to participate, not its claim on the name.
Deleted accounts are the same story again. Deletion detaches the content from the profile but does not free the handle for re-registration.
What to check besides availability
If you are checking a handle because you plan to use it for a brand, availability is only the first question. Two others matter as much:
Is someone already using a near-identical handle? Reddit treats brandname, brand_name, and brandnameHQ as three unrelated accounts. Confusion between them is a real support cost, so it is worth checking the variants you would not want mistaken for you.
Can the account actually post where you need it to? A fresh handle starts at zero karma, and a large share of active subreddits gate posting behind a karma minimum, an account-age minimum, or both. A brand-new account with the perfect name still cannot participate in the communities that matter until it has built some history. You can check a target community's bar with the subreddit karma checker.
Already have an account you want to check?
The checker above answers βdoes this handle existβ. If you want the full picture for an account that does exist β karma trends, top subreddits, posting patterns by hour and day, engagement scoring β use the Reddit user analyzer.
If an account looks active to you but its posts do not appear for anyone else, that is a different problem and the handle is not the cause β run the shadowban checker instead.
