Why the sample window matters
The endpoint requests no more than twenty-five recent non-pinned public posts. Twenty-five is a deliberate compromise: it is enough to estimate a typical posting rhythm and median interaction while keeping one cache miss small, responsive, and respectful of Reddit API limits. A separate short burst guard protects the public endpoint from rapid automated traffic even when responses are cached. Signed-in users bypass the daily cache-miss quota, while all callers still benefit from the shared result. This model controls external cost without pretending every button click performs fresh collection.
Explicit not-found results can also be cached because repeating a nonexistent name creates avoidable upstream work. Access restrictions, upstream rate limits, and transient failures are not converted into successful estimates. Cache keys use the canonical lowercase subreddit name so r/SaaS, SaaS, and saas share one entry.
