How to check if you are shadowbanned on Reddit

Paste the handle into the checker above. It requests the account's public Reddit profile — the same thing a logged-out visitor would see — and reports whether Reddit serves it. A profile that does not load is the response a shadowbanned account produces. A profile that does load means the account is present on public Reddit, which is the one thing this check establishes.

Be precise about which question that answers. It is about the account: is it there at all. It is not about your posts — those can be removed one at a time by a community while your profile sits there intact, and no account-level check will show you that.

You can run the same test by hand: open a private browsing window, log out, and visit reddit.com/user/your-handle. If your own profile is missing while you can see it perfectly in your logged-in tab, that gap is what people mean by a site-wide shadowban. The tool automates exactly this check, without the tab juggling.

Reddit shadowban test: what the result actually means

Most shadowban test tools return a single word and leave you to guess how they got it. Here is the signal behind each verdict, and — more usefully — what each one cannot tell you:

What Reddit returnsWhat it meansWhat it does not prove
Reddit serves the profileThe account is present on public Reddit, so it is not shadowbanned in the site-wide sense — the case where the account is absent entirely.Nothing else. A temporary restriction can leave the profile intact, and posts removed by a subreddit never touch it at all.
Reddit returns no profile dataThe public profile endpoint gave nothing usable back — either the handle is absent or access to it is blocked. A shadowbanned account produces this response. So does a suspended account, a deleted account, and a mistyped handle — the tool cannot tell them apart, because Reddit does not distinguish them here.

The second row is the one that matters. “Not found” is not the same as “shadowbanned”, and any tool that reports it as such will tell a person with a typo that they have been banned.

Shadowban vs suspension vs subreddit ban

Three different things get called a shadowban, and only one of them is one. They need different responses, so it is worth separating them before you appeal anything. One caveat on the vocabulary: “shadowban” is the community's word for the pattern below, not a state Reddit names in its own documentation — so do not expect a support reply to use it.

A shadowban is site-wide and silent. You are never told. Your posts and comments look normal in your own feed and are invisible to everyone else. The checker above detects this case, because the account stops being served publicly.

A suspension is site-wide and announced. Reddit tells you when you log in, and it has a stated duration or is permanent. If you have a notice, you are suspended, not shadowbanned — appeal the notice you were given. Worth knowing before you read too much into a green result: a temporary suspension does not necessarily take the public profile down with it, so the checker can report a profile for an account that is currently restricted.

A subreddit ban or AutoModerator filter is local. Your account is fine everywhere else. This is a separate situation from the other two, and the checker will show the account's profile normally — it is account-level, and this is not. To confirm it, open one of your removed posts in a logged-out window. If the post is gone while your profile is intact, the removal was content-level rather than account-level — a moderator, an automated rule in that community, or an admin acting on that one post. From outside, those three look identical.

What causes a Reddit shadowban

Reddit enforces its Content Policy with a mix of automated detection and human review, and it publishes neither the thresholds either one uses nor any measure of which behaviour weighs most. What follows is therefore not a rulebook and not a ranking — it is a set of behaviours worth avoiding, with the two that are outright policy violations marked as such:

  • The same link posted across many subredditsIdentical URLs pushed into community after community read as distribution rather than participation.
  • Posting faster than a person readsSeveral submissions in quick succession, especially in communities you have never commented in.
  • A new account that only promotesAn account whose entire history is links to one domain has no participation signal to set against the promotion signal.
  • Vote manipulationVoting on your own submissions from other accounts. Unlike the rest of this list, this one is an explicit Reddit Content Policy violation, not an inference.
  • Ban evasionRegistering a replacement account while restricted. Also an explicit Content Policy violation, and the reason the recovery steps below say not to do it.

What those entries have in common is ratio. An account that comments in a community before it posts to it, and that links to more than one place, does not resemble the accounts these systems exist to catch. That is the argument for participation-first posting — not a trick for evading detection, and not a guarantee, since none of the weighting here is public.

What to do if you are shadowbanned

In order, and the order matters:

  1. Confirm the spelling. A mistyped handle returns exactly the same “nothing served” response as a shadowban, so rule it out first.
  2. Log in and look for a notice. If one exists, you are suspended, and the appeal path is different.
  3. Appeal at reddit.com/appeal. Say what you were doing and what you will do differently. A generic “I did nothing wrong” gives a reviewer nothing to act on.
  4. Do not open a replacement account. Ban evasion is an explicit Content Policy violation in its own right, so this is the step that can turn a reviewable situation into an unarguable one.
  5. Re-check with the tool, not with your feed. Engagement is noisy enough to mislead in both directions; run the checker again instead of reading the tea leaves on a quiet post.

Two things worth knowing about what is and is not knowable here. Reddit does not publish how long a review takes, or whether a given restriction expires on its own — so treat any page that quotes you a timetable with suspicion. It does report appeal outcomes, in aggregate, in its half-yearly transparency reports; if you want a sense of the odds, read the current one rather than a number repeated second-hand on a tool page, including this one.

Checking something other than a ban?

The checker above answers one question: does Reddit still serve this account publicly. Adjacent questions have their own tools:

Is this handle taken at all? A handle that returns nothing here might simply never have been registered. The Reddit username checker answers availability rather than status.

Why is this account's reach dropping? If the account is visible and posts still go nowhere, where and when you post are the next things to look at. The Reddit user analyzer breaks down karma trends, top subreddits, and posting patterns by hour.

Will this subreddit even let me post? Many communities gate posting behind a karma or account-age minimum, and a post that never appears may simply have hit that gate. Check a community's bar with the subreddit karma checker, or read its rules first with the promotion risk checker.
