How Does the Similar Subreddit Finder Work?

Enter a subreddit you already use and the finder reads its name, title, and public description to build a topical query, then runs that query through Reddit's own subreddit search and ranks the related communities by subscriber count. It's honest about being a topic-match, not a guaranteed audience-overlap score.

Input

A subreddit you already post in (e.g. r/startups)

Output

Up to 12 related subreddits with size, description, and a link

Method

Topical query from the seed's metadata, run through Reddit subreddit search

Next step

Check each community's rules before posting with the Rules Summarizer

How to Find Subreddits Similar to One You Already Use

You found one subreddit that works for your product or content — now you want more like it. The fastest way to find similar subreddits is to start from that community itself: this finder reads the subreddit’s name, title, and public description, builds a topical query from it, and runs that query through Reddit’s own subreddit search. The result is a shortlist of related communities, ranked by subscriber count so the biggest adjacent audiences surface first.

Why There’s No Official “Similar Subreddits” List

Reddit's subreddit-recommendations endpoint is deprecated, and no current, supported API returns similar subreddits, so every tool in this space approximates. We’re honest about how: these are topically related communities found through Reddit search and ranked by size — not a guaranteed audience-overlap score. Treat the list as a starting shortlist, open the ones that fit, skim recent posts, and check each community’s rules before you post.

Related Subreddits vs Similar Subreddits

People search for both phrasings, and the two are close enough to be used interchangeably. The distinction is still worth holding onto, because it changes which result is useful to you. A related subreddit shares a topic: r/SaaS and r/Entrepreneur both discuss running a business. Similar is the stronger claim — the same topic and a comparable audience and posting culture, so a post that worked in one has a reasonable chance in the other.

This tool finds the first and gives you what you need to judge the second. Topical relation comes from Reddit search; the size, the description, and the NSFW flag on each result are there so you can decide whether the audience actually resembles yours before you spend a post on it. Nothing can tell you that automatically, and a community with the right topic and the wrong culture is a real way for an expansion attempt to fail.

“Subreddits Like” a Community: How Many Should You Add?

Fewer than the list suggests. Posting the same thing across every similar subreddit at once is repetitive cross-posting, which Reddit’s spam policy names directly — and it is the pattern the shadowban checker exists to diagnose after the fact.

A workable approach is to add communities gradually rather than all at once: participate in one before you post to it, and let each earn its place before you add the next. Reddit publishes no prescribed cadence, so treat that as a way of staying on the right side of relevance and community rules, not as a number to hit. The shortlist is a queue, not a distribution list.

Before You Post in a Newly Found Community

Two things worth checking in an adjacent subreddit, because sharing a topic does not mean sharing either one: what it allows, and when it is awake. Check the first with the subreddit rules summarizer and the promotion risk checker — a community that welcomes your topic can still ban links to it. For the second, the peak time finder reads the past 30 days of top posts in that specific community, which rarely matches the generic advice.

Many communities also gate posting behind a karma or account-age minimum. The subreddit karma checker tells you whether you clear the bar before you write the post rather than after it disappears.

Discover, then expand

This page is for expanding outward from a community you already have. If you are starting from nothing, the entry points are different: begin from a niche or product with the Subreddit Finder or from a URL with the Website Subreddit Finder, then come back here once one of them starts working.
